If you haven't heard of Graeme Base (sorry, I couldn't find an official site for him), you need to head for your local library. Now. Yes, his books are "kids' books." Yes, they're brightly colored with pictures of animals. Yes, most of his audience is probably younger than you. No, none of that matters one bit. These are quality books with enough hidden details to make them interesting over and over. I sat with The Water Hole for the better part of two hours last night by myself after the kids went to bed.
BTW, your best introduction would be either The Water Hole or The Eleventh Hour.
